Our First In-House Study!

Crossing over from care to research.

Project Early Detection (PED) is Be Part Yoluntu NPC’s first, donor-funded, in-house original research initiative, which was launched in response to a pressing need for breast cancer screening within the Mbekweni community..

From November 2023 to March 2024, PED offered clinical breast examinations and timely investigations, successfully screening 381 female participants. Of these, 55 participants were referred for imaging studies at Schnetler, Corbett & Partners Radiology (SCP) at Mediclinic Paarl, and 4 participants were referred to Paarl Hospital Surgical Department for further investigations. SCP joined our cause and provided invaluable assistance in conducting imaging studies for all Project Early Detection participants. This collaboration strengthened our commitment to giving back to the community and enhanced the project's overall impact.

The project was created to address a critical gap in breast cancer screening within the community, aiming to determine the incidence of breast cancer and understand the lived experiences of affected women. It was sparked by a patient in another trial who, after reporting a breast mass, was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. This case highlighted the community's lack of awareness about breast cancer and its management, suggesting many are unfamiliar with the disease and how to seek medical help.

Considerable time was devoted to refining the research protocol, which was reviewed and confirmed to meet both international and local standards for research involving human participants. At present a report is being formulated with the aim to publish the findings in a scientific journal.

Awards & Achievements

awards

From 2007 – 2020, we participated in the exciting development of microbicides by undertaking Phase 2 trials sponsored by the International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM). For this, we received special awards for Community Engagement and for Good Clinical Laboratory Practice from IPM.

The Stellenbosch and Mbekweni After Hours Clinics won the Mail and Guardian 2009 Investing in the Future and Drivers of Change Awards, having been submitted as an entrant by partners Metropolitan.

after hours clinic

In June 2009, CEO Dr Lize Hellström presented a well-received poster on ‘The Secrets of Success of the After Hours Clinics’ at the 4th International AIDS Conference in Durban.

In February 2010 an article appeared in the Metropolitan Journal promoting the collaboration between NPOs and corporates which referenced their support for the After Hours Clinic. Metropolitan funded the project at Mbekweni from 2008 until 2010.

world leading research site

In 2012, we completed an HIV and peripheral neuropathy trial, for which we were the world leading research site.

Revax gates mri

We took part in a large study with the Gates Research Institute on the re-vaccination of BCG (a TB vaccine) for teens.

Involving 525 participants, we achieved 96.5% retention over 3 years.

Unfortunately, the trial had to be halted since interim analysis indicated no benefit from the vaccine.

covid-19 research

At the beginning of 2021, Be Part participated in a ground-breaking Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine study (Ensemble 2).

Symposia

Our successes include hosting two Be Part Symposia: one in 2018 focused on adolescent communication, and another in 2019 presented feedback on our first TB vaccine study.

Additionally, in 2018, 2019,  and 2022 we presented at the Rural Research Day Symposia hosted by Ukwanda Research for Rural Health.

In 2019-2020, Be Part successfully launched a youth-friendly contraception clinic. Today, the Department of Health and other NPC's are following our example, expanding access to essential reproductive health services.

We are dedicated to helping trial participants and youth members achieve their full potential. Some of our proud success stories include:

  • A participant who qualified as a professional nurse

  • Two participants on track to complete their B degrees this year

  • Two who completed their N5 qualifications

  • One now employed as an electrician

  • One who, after receiving our support during her pregnancy at 16, has earned an Honours degree

  • One currently employed as a laboratory assistant
